From the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to the Royal Armouries and beautiful parks – there are a plethora of summer days out for all of the family in Yorkshire.

We love going for walks around Newmillerdam in Wakefield where my husband loves to teach the kids how to forage for food.
We also love going to the Hepworth Gallery for the crafts, playground and sculptures. Plus you can get the free city bus to the gallery from both Wakefield train stations.

Also there’s a kids section at Wakefield One museum, also on the Free Bus route.

That’s not forgetting the National Coal Mining Museum in Overton or Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries, Winter Gardens and Peace Gardens.

I also asked Blog Up North, a new northern bloggers collective (that I set up), what their favourite free days out are in the region.

Laura Dove from Five Little Doves said: “Skipton castle is one of our favourite days out. Best castle we’ve been to!”
Whereas Yorkshire Tots  founder Erin EK Rush recommends: “Room on the Broom trail, National Media Museum and Bolton Abbey (although there’s a parking fee).”.
Leeds blogger Amy Downes from A Mum Full of Dreams said: “There are some amazing places in Leeds, lots of parks that I love.

“Roundhay is my favourite. Also you can’t go wrong with Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield.”
Sarah Smith from Wharfedale Mumbler  recommends Golden Acre Park.
She said: “The park has a lovely walk around the lake with plenty of ducks to feed.
“With a newly refurbished cafe, a regular ice cream van and plenty of space for a picnic you can spend the whole day there!
“Alternatively follow the path to the right before the tunnel entrance for a lovely walk to Paul’s Pond and see the beautiful bluebells in ‘Bluebell Wood’ – complete with stream to paddle in!”
Mrs Smith also recommends the National Railway Museum in York which is home to over 300 years of history and over a million wonderful objects.

SJ Barker from Ryedale Mumbler  said: “Duncombe Park is one of Yorkshire’s finest historic houses and estates, and home to the Duncombe family.
“Located in Helmsley in the North York Moors National Park, the estate boasts over 450 acres of spectacular gardens, parklands and nature reserve.”

Where are your favourite free days out? We’d love to hear from you and include you in our next blog which will be UK wide.

  • Hi there, One of my favourite free days out in Yorkshire is at Temple Newsam, Leeds. This has been a firm favourite destination for a family day out for many reasons: The stunning park and garden offers a perfect destination for a family picnic; plenty of space for flying kites or learning to ride a bike; opportunities to see and smell the formal gardens full of colour and scent and open grassland, views and vistas. There is also a great playground for children to let off any steam they have left…if any! Parking is free in certain car parks. A fabulous destination for a free day out!
