It’s time to be a tourist in your town. All too often we take short cuts, we jump in a car and we look blindly at the road ahead. 

We scour websites trawling for the best deals to get ourselves abroad. But why not look around you, explore your neighbourhood as any visitor would. 

Even in a small city such as Wakefield there’s an abundance of history from Sandal to Pontefract Castle.

From Nostell Priory to Wakefield Cathedral and the Chantry Chapel.

And the latter two locations are taking part in this year’s Heritage Open Days – a free four-day festival running from today (Thursday) until Sunday.

Our Wedding has made history 

Ok, a little (a lot) of an overstatement but we will be featured in the Cathedral’s heritage open days as they focus on weddings that have been held at the venue over the past century. 

I can hear the bells 

They, like other religious venues, are giving tours up the steeple to see how to ring the bells, a voluntary art which is dying out. 

The National Trust is also letting people explore Nostell Priory and other of its sights for free.
